Organized by Professor Eng-Kiong Tan Ā --Ā With the growing visibility of Singapore as a global city and a hub for transnational networks over the past decade, Singapore studies has gain much currency in the arts and the humanities due to its unique multiethnic and multilingual social makeup, colonial history, urban development and cultural diversity. This symposium hopes to unfold a critical conversation about Singapore arts and culture, and how practitioners, organizations and policy makers can collaborate to utilize the arts as powerful catalysts for social change.Ā

Literary Arts:Ā Take Out, Take Home: Footloose Writers on Food and the Sense of Belonging
This presentation of literary works moderated by Jee-Leong Koh aims to showcase and build awareness of Singaporean writing in New York. The event provides a wonderful opportunity to hear and engage with the most distinctive voices coming out of the Little Red Dot.
7:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Venue TBD
A boy on the cusp of adulthood entering compulsory military service. The end of an era in Mandarin radio. Two schoolgirls and an autograph book. The compressed lifespan of a woman from the 1960s to present day. Film school friends in an honestly side-splitting interrogation of religion. Each film in my selection seems wildly different from the next, but they are all deeply Singaporean in their own specificity. In presenting a range of diverse films that are entertainingly watchable yet socially sharp, they stack up to reveal a jigsaw portrait of Singapore that may not square with official domestic narratives nor foreign media generalities, that is to be taken on its own terms.
7:30 pm to 9:30 pm
